Wired TV Headphones

Advantages of Wired Headphones

Even the cheapest wired TV headphones offer good quality sound, no static or signal drop-outs and no need to replace batteries.  In terms of sound quality they will be superior to many of the budget wireless headphones available.  For the occasional user they are probably the best choice.

Disadvantages

The cable means that they are perhaps less comfortable and do not allow movement around the room or house.  They also lack the surround sound features of the more expensive wireless tv headphones.

What should you buy

The Beyerdynamic DT 131 Wired TV HeadphonesBeyerdynamic DT 131 TV headphones are perfectly suited for comfortable, private tv viewing. They come supplied with an extra long lead (18 feet) and have individual left and right volume controls.

Alternatively, if you wish to increase your choice, you can purchase a headphone extension cable to extend the range of normal wired headphones.

If your television or home theater system does not have a headphone socket but does have an RCA output (red and white sockets), you can buy a 3.5mm to RCA adapter so that you can connect your headphones to your television.

It’s worth pointing out that this is a line out audio source and is designed to be connected to an amplifier. The audio signal will need boosting to give a reasonable volume. You can purchase a relatively inexpensive headphone amplifier to boost the signal and provide volume control.

You will need to purchase the relevant 3.5mm male-male adapter to connect the headphone amplifier to the RCA adapter.

A headphone amplifier will also greatly improve the sound quality supplied to your TV headphones even if you are using a standard headphone socket.
